Both formats store uncompressed audio in exactly the same way — the difference is which byte order the header declares and which chunks it is allowed to carry — so the conversion rewrites a few hundred bytes at the front of the file and copies the rest verbatim. The audio that comes out is sample-for-sample identical, the file is the same size to within a rounding error, and it can be converted back and forth indefinitely without anything happening to it at all. WAV is Microsoft and IBM’s RIFF-based audio container from 1991, and it is what almost every audio interface and DAW writes on record.
Yes. Both formats keep every sample, so decoding the WAV returns a bit-identical copy of the audio inside the AIFF. Nothing is quantised, nothing is discarded, and the conversion can be repeated indefinitely without accumulating artefacts. What changes is the file size and which software will open it. AIFF stores uncompressed big-endian PCM — the Apple-side equivalent of WAV, with the same bit-for-bit fidelity. WAV normally stores raw uncompressed PCM — every sample kept exactly, at whatever bit depth and sample rate was captured.
Not intact. AIFF carries a proper metadata block, but WAV has no standard place for artist, album, track number or cover art, so tags are dropped rather than mangled. Keep the AIFF as the tagged copy, or re-tag afterwards with a tool like Mp3tag or MusicBrainz Picard. WAV is enormous — roughly 10 MB per stereo minute at CD quality — and the classic format has a 4 GB ceiling and no room for proper tags.
A container with the audio inside it, rather than the audio on its own. That extra layer is where the length, the seek index and whatever metadata the format defines are kept, so a player knows how long a WAV is before decoding a single frame instead of scanning the whole file to find out. It also means the extension does not always settle what is inside: several containers of this kind are allowed to hold more than one sort of audio, which is why two WAV files can behave differently while looking identical from outside.
It is being quietly succeeded rather than switched off. Everything that plays it today will keep playing it — formats do not stop working — but new encoders and new hardware increasingly default to its replacement, so the real question is whether these files have to open on something bought ten years from now. For anything shared or published, converting is cheap insurance. For a personal library that already plays fine, leaving it alone is a defensible answer. AIFF is as large as WAV with worse support outside the Apple world, so it is a poor choice for distribution.

The specification is public, anyone can implement an encoder or decoder without asking or paying, and nobody can change those terms later — which is why it turns up in open-source tooling, in game engines and anywhere a licence negotiation would have killed the project. Converting away from it does not undo that; the files you already have stay exactly as usable as they were.
