MP4 to M4V Conversion FAQ
What does the MP4 to M4V converter do?
+
It transcodes a MP4 video into the M4V container. Resolution, frame rate, and aspect ratio are preserved by default — useful when you need a different format for a target player without quality loss.
Will resolution and frame rate be preserved in the M4V?
+
Yes. MP4 → M4V keeps resolution, frame rate, and aspect ratio unchanged by default. To change them, use the Resize or Speed tool on the result.
Is the MP4 to M4V conversion reversible?
+
You can convert the M4V back to MP4 on this site. If either format involved is lossy, the round-trip is not bit-perfect even though it is visually or audibly close.
Will the converted M4V be a different size than the MP4?
+
Modern codecs compress better, so M4V from a legacy MP4 is typically 30-60% smaller at equivalent quality. Conversions in the opposite direction can grow the file.
Can MP4 be converted to M4V without re-encoding the video?
+
Yes, and it is the fast path. MP4 and M4V share the same underlying box structure, so the video and audio streams are copied across byte-for-byte and only the container wrapper is rewritten. Nothing is decoded and nothing is re-compressed, so a feature-length file finishes in under a minute instead of half an hour, with output quality identical to the source. MP4 is ISO/IEC 14496-14, standardised in 2001 and derived from the same QuickTime box layout MOV uses. M4V is Apple’s variant of MP4, used by iTunes and the Apple TV app for films and TV episodes.
Will the M4V I get back be locked to a store or an account?
+
No, and the extension is what causes the confusion. M4V names a video file with the same internal structure as an ordinary MP4; the ones sold through a store are additionally wrapped in the seller's protection, and that wrapping is a property of the purchase rather than of the format. A file converted here has none of it — a plain, unprotected video that happens to carry that extension, playable wherever the extension is recognised and convertible onward as many times as you like.
Can the M4V hold more than one audio track?
+
Yes, and it is a real upgrade over MP4. M4V treats every audio stream as a first-class track, so an original-language mix, a dub and a director commentary can live in one file with the player switching between them on demand. M4V keeps chapter markers, artwork and subtitle tracks in the shape the Apple TV app expects, which plain MP4 often loses.
Does M4V support chapter markers that MP4 did not?
+
It does. M4V stores chapters as container metadata, so a long recording can be navigated by section instead of by scrubbing a progress bar. MP4 has nowhere to put that information, so if the source shipped with a chapter list it was in a sidecar file — hand that to the converter and it gets written into the M4V.
Can I still embed the file on a web page after converting MP4 to M4V?
+
Not directly. MP4 plays inline in every browser; M4V does not, so a page embedding it falls back to a download link or an empty player frame. If the file is destined for a website, keep the MP4 for the web and treat the M4V as the archive or editing copy. DRM-protected M4V purchases cannot be converted by anything; only unprotected M4V files are convertible, and non-Apple players often need the extension renamed.
Is there a file-size limit when converting MP4 to M4V?
+
Anonymous uploads are capped at a generous default; signed-in free accounts get a higher cap, and Pro accounts have no per-file limit. Browser memory is usually the practical constraint long before our server-side limits kick in.
Can I batch-convert several MP4 files to M4V at once?
+
Yes. Drop or pick multiple MP4 files in one upload — the converter processes them in parallel and returns a ZIP of the M4V results. There is no need to repeat the upload step per file.
What happens to my MP4 files after the conversion?
+
Uploaded files and M4V outputs are auto-deleted after a short retention window. We do not inspect, share, or train on user files. Direct download links are time-limited and tied to your session.
