Is the MP4 to M4V conversion reversible?

You can convert the M4V back to MP4 on this site. If either format involved is lossy, the round-trip is not bit-perfect even though it is visually or audibly close.
Can MP4 be converted to M4V without re-encoding the video?

No, not on this page. MP4 and M4V share the same underlying structure, but the converter re-encodes the video for this pair rather than copying the stream, so it takes longer than a container change and the picture is compressed again. Choose High Quality under Quality to keep the most detail. MP4 is ISO/IEC 14496-14, standardised in 2001 and derived from the same QuickTime box layout MOV uses. M4V is Apple’s variant of MP4, used by iTunes and the Apple TV app for films and TV episodes.
Will the M4V I get back be locked to a store or an account?

No, and the extension is what causes the confusion. M4V names a video file with the same internal structure as an ordinary MP4; the ones sold through a store are additionally wrapped in the seller's protection, and that wrapping is a property of the purchase rather than of the format. A file converted here has none of it — a plain, unprotected video that happens to carry that extension, playable wherever the extension is recognised and convertible onward as many times as you like.
Can the M4V hold more than one audio track?

Yes, and it is a real upgrade over MP4. M4V treats every audio stream as a first-class track, so an original-language mix, a dub and a director commentary can live in one file with the player switching between them on demand. M4V keeps chapter markers, artwork and subtitle tracks in the shape the Apple TV app expects, which plain MP4 often loses.
Does M4V support chapter markers that MP4 did not?

It does. M4V stores chapters as container metadata, so a long recording can be navigated by section instead of by scrubbing a progress bar. MP4 has nowhere to put that information, so the converted M4V starts with no chapters; add markers afterwards with a tool such as MKVToolNix or ffmpeg.
Can I still embed the file on a web page after converting MP4 to M4V?

Not directly. MP4 plays inline in every browser; M4V does not, so a page embedding it falls back to a download link or an empty player frame. If the file is destined for a website, keep the MP4 for the web and treat the M4V as the archive or editing copy. DRM-protected M4V purchases cannot be converted by anything; only unprotected M4V files are convertible, and non-Apple players often need the extension renamed.
