ODT to TXT Conversion FAQ

What does the ODT to TXT converter do?
+
It converts a ODT document into TXT. Text, paragraph styles, tables, and embedded images are preserved as closely as the target format allows.
Headings, paragraph styles, tables, and embedded images carry across. Advanced layout (text boxes, complex columns, macros) may simplify when TXT does not support the feature one-for-one.
You can convert the TXT back to ODT on this site. If either format involved is lossy, the round-trip is not bit-perfect even though it is visually or audibly close.
Default settings target broadcast / web quality — visually identical to the source for most viewers. For archival use, pick the highest quality option in the converter settings.
The words, and nothing else. TXT stores characters and line breaks, so bold, italics, headings, fonts, colours, tables, images, headers and footers are all discarded — not degraded, removed. That is the correct outcome when you want the text for indexing, diffing or scripting, and the wrong one if the formatting carried meaning. Plain text is the most durable format there is: it will still be readable when every proprietary format of this decade is unopenable. TXT carries no styling, no images, no tables and no page structure, so any layout in the source is discarded permanently.
Body text, headings, lists and simple tables move across cleanly in both directions. The known casualties are the same ones LibreOffice has always had: tracked changes, comments anchored to ranges, footnote numbering schemes and nested table borders. Check those specifically rather than assuming the whole document made it.
Yes, and the ODT would not have. Browsers ship a decoder for TXT and none for ODT, so an ODT link forces a download while a TXT renders inline. That is usually the deciding factor when the file is going onto a web page rather than into an application.
Anonymous uploads are capped at a generous default; signed-in free accounts get a higher cap, and Pro accounts have no per-file limit. Browser memory is usually the practical constraint long before our server-side limits kick in.
Yes. Drop or pick multiple ODT files in one upload — the converter processes them in parallel and returns a ZIP of the TXT results. There is no need to repeat the upload step per file.
Uploaded files and TXT outputs are auto-deleted after a short retention window. We do not inspect, share, or train on user files. Direct download links are time-limited and tied to your session.
Yes — TXT opens in Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice, and most office suites. Text, formatting, and tables are editable.
No. The converter runs entirely in your browser plus our cloud — no plugin, no install, no admin rights. It works on Windows, macOS, Linux, ChromeOS, iOS, and Android.

ODT

ODT (Open Document Text) is a file format used for word processing files in open-source office suites like LibreOffice and OpenOffice. ODT files contain text, images, and formatting, granting a standardized format for file interchange.

TXT

TXT files contain only plain text, readable by any type of text editor on any platform.
