What happens to the subtitle tracks in my VOB file?

They cannot stay selectable, because AVI has no soft-subtitle stream to hold them. There are two ways out: burn them into the video during conversion, which makes them permanent and unstyleable, or export them as a separate .srt alongside the AVI for the player to load. The converter tells you which it did rather than dropping them silently. AVI has no native support for modern codecs, variable frame rate, soft subtitles or files over 4 GB without hacks, and its per-chunk overhead bloats the file.
What should I watch for converting a VOB from a disc or a broadcast recording?

Interlacing and aspect ratio, in that order. Material made for television is interlaced almost without exception, so deinterlacing has to be on or every moving edge arrives combed; and a great deal of it is stored as non-square pixels with a flag saying how wide to display it, which a converter that ignores the flag turns into a stretched or squashed AVI. Check the first few seconds of the output before running a batch — both faults are obvious immediately and invisible in the settings. VOB is the Video Object container found in the VIDEO_TS folder of every DVD — an MPEG-2 program stream with DVD-specific navigation data added.
Why does my VOB file fail to convert to AVI?

Almost always DRM. Some VOB files are encrypted at the bitstream level by the store or software that issued them, and an encrypted stream cannot be decoded by us or by anything else without the licence key. Files you recorded, exported or downloaded unprotected convert normally; a licensed purchase will not, and no converter can honestly promise otherwise. VOB is split across files, may be CSS-encrypted, and carries navigation packets that confuse general-purpose players.
Will the AVI still play smoothly on a phone or a TV?

It may not. VOB is decoded by dedicated silicon on phones, tablets and TVs, which is why it plays without flattening the battery. AVI typically falls back to software decoding on the same hardware — higher CPU load, a warmer device, and dropped frames on 4K material. For a device target, VOB is the safer container to stay in.
What happens to 5.1 surround audio when converting VOB to AVI?

It is downmixed to stereo, because AVI has no dependable multichannel path. The fold-down uses the standard ITU coefficients so dialogue in the centre channel stays intelligible and the surrounds come in at reduced level rather than vanishing. Anything that relied on discrete channel placement is gone after that.
Is there any point converting between two legacy formats like VOB and AVI?

Both formats come from the same pre-H.264 era, so neither conversion buys efficiency, quality or future-proofing — it buys compatibility with one particular device.
