WMV to AVI Conversion FAQ
What does the WMV to AVI converter do?
+
It transcodes a WMV video into the AVI container. Resolution, frame rate, and aspect ratio are preserved by default — useful when you need a different format for a target player without quality loss.
Will resolution and frame rate be preserved in the AVI?
+
Yes. WMV → AVI keeps resolution, frame rate, and aspect ratio unchanged by default. To change them, use the Resize or Speed tool on the result.
Will the WMV play smoothly on modern devices after converting to AVI?
+
Yes. Legacy WMV files often fail to play in modern browsers and on iOS / Android. AVI uses widely supported codecs that play natively on phones, tablets, smart TVs, and every modern browser.
Will the converted AVI be a different size than the WMV?
+
Modern codecs compress better, so AVI from a legacy WMV is typically 30-60% smaller at equivalent quality. Conversions in the opposite direction can grow the file.
Can the AVI hold more than one audio track?
+
Yes, and it is a real upgrade over WMV. AVI treats every audio stream as a first-class track, so an original-language mix, a dub and a director commentary can live in one file with the player switching between them on demand. AVI is trivially simple, which is exactly why ancient camcorders, capture cards, DVD ripping tools and Windows-era software all still emit it.
Will the text in my WMV screen recording still be readable as AVI?
+
It will if you keep the resolution and raise the quality. Screen content is the hardest thing to compress well — large flat areas with hairline-thin text over them — and the default settings on any encoder are tuned for camera footage, where a little smearing is invisible. Scaling a recording down is what actually destroys the text, far more than the codec does, so encode at the captured resolution and let the file be larger than you expected. WMV is Windows Media Video, Microsoft’s ASF-based format from the Windows XP era.
Why does my WMV file fail to convert to AVI?
+
Almost always DRM. Some WMV files are encrypted at the bitstream level by the store or software that issued them, and an encrypted stream cannot be decoded by us or by anything else without the licence key. Files you recorded, exported or downloaded unprotected convert normally; a licensed purchase will not, and no converter can honestly promise otherwise. WMV is effectively a dead end: macOS, iOS, Android and every browser need third-party decoders, and some WMV files carry DRM that cannot be converted at all.
What happens to 5.1 surround audio when converting WMV to AVI?
+
It is downmixed to stereo, because AVI has no dependable multichannel path. The fold-down uses the standard ITU coefficients so dialogue in the centre channel stays intelligible and the surrounds come in at reduced level rather than vanishing. Anything that relied on discrete channel placement is gone after that. AVI has no native support for modern codecs, variable frame rate, soft subtitles or files over 4 GB without hacks, and its per-chunk overhead bloats the file.
Is there any point converting between two legacy formats like WMV and AVI?
+
Only if a specific piece of equipment demands the target. Both formats come from the same pre-H.264 era, so neither conversion buys efficiency, quality or future-proofing — it buys compatibility with one particular device. If the goal is to keep the footage usable long-term, convert to a current container instead of sideways.
Is there a file-size limit when converting WMV to AVI?
+
Anonymous uploads are capped at a generous default; signed-in free accounts get a higher cap, and Pro accounts have no per-file limit. Browser memory is usually the practical constraint long before our server-side limits kick in.
Can I batch-convert several WMV files to AVI at once?
+
Yes. Drop or pick multiple WMV files in one upload — the converter processes them in parallel and returns a ZIP of the AVI results. There is no need to repeat the upload step per file.
What happens to my WMV files after the conversion?
+
Uploaded files and AVI outputs are auto-deleted after a short retention window. We do not inspect, share, or train on user files. Direct download links are time-limited and tied to your session.
