GIF to BMP Conversion FAQ

What does the GIF to BMP converter do?
+
It takes a GIF image and re-encodes the pixel data as BMP. Colour and resolution are preserved; the difference is the container and compression scheme.
BMP does not support transparency. Transparent regions in the GIF will be flattened against a solid background — white by default. If you need to keep transparency, convert to PNG, WebP, or TIFF instead.
BMP is a single-frame format. The converter takes the first frame of the animation by default. To export every frame, convert to BMP after first splitting the GIF with the Split tool.
Default settings target broadcast / web quality — visually identical to the source for most viewers. For archival use, pick the highest quality option in the converter settings.
No — BMP has no alpha channel, so transparent regions are composited against a background colour, white unless you change it. That is the single most common surprise in this conversion: a logo that looked clean on a dark page arrives with a white box around it. Set the matte colour to match wherever the image will sit, or choose a target that keeps alpha. BMP is gigantic — a 12-megapixel photo is around 36 MB — and no browser treats it as a sane web format.
Only the first frame survives, because BMP is a still format with nowhere to store the rest. If the animation matters, target a format that animates, or convert to a video container instead and keep the motion.
No pixel data, no. Both formats store the image without lossy compression, so the picture that comes out is identical to the one that went in and the conversion can be repeated indefinitely. What changes is file size, and which features travel — colour depth, embedded profiles, layers and animation are all supported unevenly between lossless formats. GIF is lossless but capped at a 256-colour palette per frame, using LZW compression and single-colour binary transparency. BMP usually stores completely uncompressed pixel rows with a small header, which is why it is so simple to parse.
Anonymous uploads are capped at a generous default; signed-in free accounts get a higher cap, and Pro accounts have no per-file limit. Browser memory is usually the practical constraint long before our server-side limits kick in.
Yes. Drop or pick multiple GIF files in one upload — the converter processes them in parallel and returns a ZIP of the BMP results. There is no need to repeat the upload step per file.
Uploaded files and BMP outputs are auto-deleted after a short retention window. We do not inspect, share, or train on user files. Direct download links are time-limited and tied to your session.
BMP opens in mainstream image viewers and editors. For web embedding, consider converting to PNG or WebP first since BMP is not always natively supported in browsers.
No. The converter runs entirely in your browser plus our cloud — no plugin, no install, no admin rights. It works on Windows, macOS, Linux, ChromeOS, iOS, and Android.

GIF

GIF files cover animation and limited color palettes, perfect for clean animations, memes, and icons.

BMP

BMP files store images in uncompressed bitmap format, resulting in large file sizes but perfect sharpness.
