What output quality should I expect from MP3 to M4A?

Is converting MP3 to M4A a second round of lossy compression?

Yes, and it is worth planning around. Both formats are lossy, so the M4A encoder is working from audio that has already been through one psychoacoustic pass, and its own decisions compound the first set. At 192 kbps or above the result is still transparent for most listening. If you have a lossless master anywhere, encoding the M4A from that instead avoids the double pass entirely. MP3 is lossy: a psychoacoustic model discards frequencies the ear is unlikely to notice, typically at 128 to 320 kbps. An M4A holds AAC in most cases, or Apple Lossless (ALAC) when it came from a lossless rip.
What exactly is an M4A file?

A container with the audio inside it, rather than the audio on its own. That extra layer is where the length, the seek index and whatever metadata the format defines are kept, so a player knows how long an M4A is before decoding a single frame instead of scanning the whole file to find out. It also means the extension does not always settle what is inside: several containers of this kind are allowed to hold more than one sort of audio, which is why two M4A files can behave differently while looking identical from outside.
Most of my MP3 files came from CDs — does that matter here?

Only in that the encode already happened once. An MP3 ripped from a disc was compressed at whatever bitrate the ripper was set to years ago, and that is the ceiling on everything downstream — converting cannot recover what the ripper discarded. If the discs are still on a shelf, re-ripping to a lossless format and encoding from that gives a genuinely better result than any conversion of the existing files. MP3 is MPEG-1 Audio Layer III, finalised in 1993, and still the most universally decodable audio format that exists.
Is MP3 free to use and distribute?

Yes, without conditions worth worrying about. The specification is public, anyone can implement an encoder or decoder without asking or paying, and nobody can change those terms later — which is why it turns up in open-source tooling, in game engines and anywhere a licence negotiation would have killed the project. Converting away from it does not undo that; the files you already have stay exactly as usable as they were.
Is M4A an Apple-only format?

It came out of Apple and it stops there. M4A is what the Music app and the iTunes Store settled on, which is why it is the default on every Apple device and why the extension reads as an Apple one — but the specification underneath is an open standard, and every current phone, browser, car head unit and media player reads it. There is nothing to install and no Apple software involved in producing one here. M4A is an MP4 container carrying audio only, and it is what iTunes, Apple Music and the iPhone Voice Memos app produce.
Is there a file-size limit when converting MP3 to M4A?
