No, and it is worth being blunt: nothing can. The MP3 already discarded detail during its original encode, and wrapping what remains in a lossless WAV preserves exactly that — no more. The file gets several times larger and sounds identical. It is still the right move before editing, because WAV will not add a second generation of artefacts when you export. WAV is the correct format for editing, mastering and archiving, because it can be re-encoded any number of times without accumulating artefacts. MP3 is technically outclassed by AAC and Opus at every bitrate, cannot store more than two channels usefully, and always adds a small encoder delay.
Not intact. MP3 carries a proper metadata block, but WAV has no standard place for artist, album, track number or cover art, so tags are dropped rather than mangled. Keep the MP3 as the tagged copy, or re-tag afterwards with a tool like Mp3tag or MusicBrainz Picard. WAV is enormous — roughly 10 MB per stereo minute at CD quality — and the classic format has a 4 GB ceiling and no room for proper tags.
A container with the audio inside it, rather than the audio on its own. That extra layer is where the length, the seek index and whatever metadata the format defines are kept, so a player knows how long a WAV is before decoding a single frame instead of scanning the whole file to find out. It also means the extension does not always settle what is inside: several containers of this kind are allowed to hold more than one sort of audio, which is why two WAV files can behave differently while looking identical from outside. WAV normally stores raw uncompressed PCM — every sample kept exactly, at whatever bit depth and sample rate was captured.
Only in that the encode already happened once. An MP3 ripped from a disc was compressed at whatever bitrate the ripper was set to years ago, and that is the ceiling on everything downstream — converting cannot recover what the ripper discarded. If the discs are still on a shelf, re-ripping to a lossless format and encoding from that gives a genuinely better result than any conversion of the existing files. MP3 is MPEG-1 Audio Layer III, finalised in 1993, and still the most universally decodable audio format that exists.
Yes, without conditions worth worrying about. The specification is public, anyone can implement an encoder or decoder without asking or paying, and nobody can change those terms later — which is why it turns up in open-source tooling, in game engines and anywhere a licence negotiation would have killed the project. Converting away from it does not undo that; the files you already have stay exactly as usable as they were.
