What does the OGG to AIFF audio converter do?

OGG is already lossy, so converting to AIFF preserves the existing audio without further degradation, but it cannot recover detail lost in the original encode. AIFF is right if you plan to edit and resave without compounding compression artifacts.
Will the sample rate and channel layout be preserved?

By default yes — stereo stays stereo, the original sample rate (44.1 kHz, 48 kHz, etc.) is carried through to the AIFF output.
Will the AIFF file be much larger than the source OGG?

Yes — lossless audio is typically 5-10x larger than lossy audio at perceptually equivalent quality. Plan for ~10 MB per minute for AIFF versus ~1 MB per minute for high-bitrate OGG.
Will the AIFF be larger than the OGG?

Yes — lossless containers store every byte. Expect the AIFF to be 3-8x the size of the OGG. The benefit is no further quality loss on editing or re-encoding.
Does converting OGG to AIFF improve the audio quality?

No, and it is worth being blunt: nothing can. The OGG already discarded detail during its original encode, and wrapping what remains in a lossless AIFF preserves exactly that — no more. The file gets several times larger and sounds identical. It is still the right move before editing, because AIFF will not add a second generation of artefacts when you export. AIFF is the studio interchange format on macOS, handles metadata better than plain WAV, and imports into Logic and Pro Tools instantly. OGG has poor hardware support — car stereos, older iPods and many TVs will not see the file at all.
What exactly is an AIFF file?

A container with the audio inside it, rather than the audio on its own. That extra layer is where the length, the seek index and whatever metadata the format defines are kept, so a player knows how long an AIFF is before decoding a single frame instead of scanning the whole file to find out. It also means the extension does not always settle what is inside: several containers of this kind are allowed to hold more than one sort of audio, which is why two AIFF files can behave differently while looking identical from outside. AIFF stores uncompressed big-endian PCM — the Apple-side equivalent of WAV, with the same bit-for-bit fidelity.
Where do OGG files normally come from?

From the web, and mostly from software rather than from hardware. OGG was designed for streaming and for open-source tool chains, so it turns up in game assets, browser recordings, podcast pipelines and anything built by people who did not want a licensing conversation. What it does not turn up in is consumer electronics, which is the usual reason somebody needs to convert one at all. OGG is the Xiph.Org container, usually holding Vorbis audio, created in 2000 as a patent-free alternative to MP3.
Is OGG on its way out?

It is being quietly succeeded rather than switched off. Everything that plays it today will keep playing it — formats do not stop working — but new encoders and new hardware increasingly default to its replacement, so the real question is whether these files have to open on something bought ten years from now. For anything shared or published, converting is cheap insurance. For a personal library that already plays fine, leaving it alone is a defensible answer.
Is OGG free to use and distribute?

Yes, without conditions worth worrying about. The specification is public, anyone can implement an encoder or decoder without asking or paying, and nobody can change those terms later — which is why it turns up in open-source tooling, in game engines and anywhere a licence negotiation would have killed the project. Converting away from it does not undo that; the files you already have stay exactly as usable as they were.
Is AIFF still a sensible thing to convert to?

For a personal library, yes; for anything you are handing to somebody else, think twice. AIFF is being quietly succeeded rather than switched off — everything that plays it today will carry on playing it — but new encoders and new devices increasingly default to its replacement, which does the same job at least as well. If the file only has to open on your own machines, it is fine. If it has to open on a device bought in five years, pick the newer one. AIFF is as large as WAV with worse support outside the Apple world, so it is a poor choice for distribution.
Is there a file-size limit when converting OGG to AIFF?
