Some, and it is permanent — this is the one direction where information is genuinely thrown away. AIFF holds every sample exactly; WMA discards what a psychoacoustic model predicts you will not hear. At 192 kbps and above that prediction is good enough to be transparent on most material and most equipment. Keep the AIFF as your master, because you cannot get back to it from the WMA. AIFF stores uncompressed big-endian PCM — the Apple-side equivalent of WAV, with the same bit-for-bit fidelity. WMA is lossy by default, in an ASF container, with lossless and voice-optimised variants that are rarely encountered.
A container with the audio inside it, rather than the audio on its own. That extra layer is where the length, the seek index and whatever metadata the format defines are kept, so a player knows how long a WMA is before decoding a single frame instead of scanning the whole file to find out. It also means the extension does not always settle what is inside: several containers of this kind are allowed to hold more than one sort of audio, which is why two WMA files can behave differently while looking identical from outside.
It is being quietly succeeded rather than switched off. Everything that plays it today will keep playing it — formats do not stop working — but new encoders and new hardware increasingly default to its replacement, so the real question is whether these files have to open on something bought ten years from now. For anything shared or published, converting is cheap insurance. For a personal library that already plays fine, leaving it alone is a defensible answer. AIFF is as large as WAV with worse support outside the Apple world, so it is a poor choice for distribution.

The specification is public, anyone can implement an encoder or decoder without asking or paying, and nobody can change those terms later — which is why it turns up in open-source tooling, in game engines and anywhere a licence negotiation would have killed the project. Converting away from it does not undo that; the files you already have stay exactly as usable as they were.
For one specific piece of software or hardware that will accept nothing else — which is a real situation and the only good reason. WMA belongs to an earlier generation: newer codecs do the same job at smaller sizes, general-purpose players drop support for it rather than adding it, and nothing new is being built around it. If something in the chain genuinely demands it, convert and keep the original as the master. If nothing does, convert away from it instead. WMA is unsupported almost everywhere outside Windows, and older WMA files may carry DRM that blocks conversion entirely.
