Both formats store uncompressed audio in exactly the same way — the difference is which byte order the header declares and which chunks it is allowed to carry — so the conversion rewrites a few hundred bytes at the front of the file and copies the rest verbatim. The audio that comes out is sample-for-sample identical, the file is the same size to within a rounding error, and it can be converted back and forth indefinitely without anything happening to it at all. AIFF is Apple’s Audio Interchange File Format from 1988, built on the same IFF chunk design as AVI’s RIFF.
Yes. Both formats keep every sample, so decoding the AIFF returns a bit-identical copy of the audio inside the WAV. Nothing is quantised, nothing is discarded, and the conversion can be repeated indefinitely without accumulating artefacts. What changes is the file size and which software will open it. WAV normally stores raw uncompressed PCM — every sample kept exactly, at whatever bit depth and sample rate was captured. AIFF stores uncompressed big-endian PCM — the Apple-side equivalent of WAV, with the same bit-for-bit fidelity.
Yes, and it is a genuine gain over WAV, which has nowhere dependable to store any of it. AIFF carries title, artist, album, year, track number and embedded cover art in the container itself, so a music library files it correctly without a manual pass. AIFF is the studio interchange format on macOS, handles metadata better than plain WAV, and imports into Logic and Pro Tools instantly.
A container with the audio inside it, rather than the audio on its own. That extra layer is where the length, the seek index and whatever metadata the format defines are kept, so a player knows how long an AIFF is before decoding a single frame instead of scanning the whole file to find out. It also means the extension does not always settle what is inside: several containers of this kind are allowed to hold more than one sort of audio, which is why two AIFF files can behave differently while looking identical from outside.
Often not. WAV is decoded by essentially everything, including car head units and elderly players; AIFF needs software that knows the codec, which standalone hardware frequently does not have. If the destination is a car stereo or a portable player, that is a strong argument for staying on WAV. AIFF is as large as WAV with worse support outside the Apple world, so it is a poor choice for distribution.
Yes, without conditions worth worrying about. The specification is public, anyone can implement an encoder or decoder without asking or paying, and nobody can change those terms later — which is why it turns up in open-source tooling, in game engines and anywhere a licence negotiation would have killed the project. Converting away from it does not undo that; the files you already have stay exactly as usable as they were.
