WebM to TIFF Conversion FAQ

What does the WEBM to TIFF converter do?
+
It converts a WEBM file into TIFF format.
WEBM files have no alpha channel, so the result will have a solid background. To get transparency in TIFF, use the Remove Background tool on the TIFF output.
You can convert the TIFF back to WEBM on this site. If either format involved is lossy, the round-trip is not bit-perfect even though it is visually or audibly close.
Yes — lossless containers store every byte. Expect the TIFF to be 3-8x the size of the WEBM. The benefit is no further quality loss on editing or re-encoding.
The one you point at, not just the first. A timestamp picks a single moment out of the WEBM; an interval setting walks the whole video and returns one TIFF per step, delivered as a ZIP. The default grabs a frame a few seconds in rather than at 00:00, because the opening frame of a video is very often black. WebM is a strict subset of Matroska that Google published in 2010 specifically to give HTML5 video a royalty-free container.
The format does, but the source has no alpha to give it — video frames and rendered pages are fully opaque by nature, so every pixel arrives solid. The alpha channel is still useful afterwards: it means you can cut a subject out of the TIFF later without changing format again. TIFF handles CMYK, 16-bit depth, embedded ICC profiles and multi-page documents, which is exactly what print and archival workflows require.
Larger than you might expect, because TIFF keeps every pixel exactly rather than approximating. A 1080p still lands around 2-5 MB and a 4K still around 6-15 MB, so a long extraction run adds up quickly. That is the right trade when the images feed further processing, and the wrong one when they are going straight onto a web page. TIFF is a container more than a codec: it can hold uncompressed, LZW, ZIP or even JPEG data, at up to 32 bits per channel, with multiple pages in one file.
Anonymous uploads are capped at a generous default; signed-in free accounts get a higher cap, and Pro accounts have no per-file limit. Browser memory is usually the practical constraint long before our server-side limits kick in.
Yes. Drop or pick multiple WEBM files in one upload — the converter processes them in parallel and returns a ZIP of the TIFF results. There is no need to repeat the upload step per file.
Uploaded files and TIFF outputs are auto-deleted after a short retention window. We do not inspect, share, or train on user files. Direct download links are time-limited and tied to your session.
TIFF opens in mainstream image viewers and editors. For web embedding, consider converting to PNG or WebP first since TIFF is not always natively supported in browsers.
No. The converter runs entirely in your browser plus our cloud — no plugin, no install, no admin rights. It works on Windows, macOS, Linux, ChromeOS, iOS, and Android.

WebM
