What happens to the layers in my TIFF file?

They are flattened, permanently, into one composited image. Blend modes, masks, adjustment layers and editable text are all resolved into final pixels because HEIC has no structure to hold them. Keep the TIFF as the working master and treat the HEIC strictly as an export. TIFF handles CMYK, 16-bit depth, embedded ICC profiles and multi-page documents, which is exactly what print and archival workflows require. HEIC is patent-encumbered and still widely refused: browsers do not display it, Windows needs an extra codec, and a great many upload forms reject the extension outright.
Will transparency survive converting TIFF to HEIC?

No — HEIC has no alpha channel, so transparent regions are composited against a background colour, white unless you change it. That is the single most common surprise in this conversion: a logo that looked clean on a dark page arrives with a white box around it. Set the matte colour to match wherever the image will sit, or choose a target that keeps alpha.
Will my CMYK colour survive the conversion to HEIC?

It is converted to sRGB, because HEIC has no CMYK mode. For screen use that is exactly what you want. For commercial print it is not — the gamut shift changes how saturated colours reproduce on press, so send the printer the original TIFF rather than the HEIC.
Does the HEIC keep the EXIF data from my TIFF?

By default yes, wherever the target has somewhere to put it — camera model, exposure settings, lens and GPS coordinates all carry across. GPS is the field worth thinking about: if the image is going to be published, use the strip-metadata option so you are not broadcasting where the photo was taken. TIFF is the Tagged Image File Format from 1986, and it is the format scanning, publishing and archiving industries standardised on.
Is anything lost converting between TIFF and HEIC?

No pixel data, no. Both formats store the image without lossy compression, so the picture that comes out is identical to the one that went in and the conversion can be repeated indefinitely. What changes is file size, and which features travel — colour depth, embedded profiles, layers and animation are all supported unevenly between lossless formats. TIFF is a container more than a codec: it can hold uncompressed, LZW, ZIP or even JPEG data, at up to 32 bits per channel, with multiple pages in one file. An HEIC holds HEVC-compressed stills — the same codec family used for video — and can carry several images, a depth map and non-destructive edits in one file.
Is there a file-size limit when converting TIFF to HEIC?
