BMP to PNG Conversion FAQ

What does the BMP to PNG converter do?
+
It takes a BMP image and re-encodes the pixel data as PNG. Colour and resolution are preserved; the difference is the container and compression scheme.
BMP files have no alpha channel, so the result will have a solid background. To get transparency in PNG, use the Remove Background tool on the PNG output.
You can convert the PNG back to BMP on this site. If either format involved is lossy, the round-trip is not bit-perfect even though it is visually or audibly close.
Default settings target broadcast / web quality — visually identical to the source for most viewers. For archival use, pick the highest quality option in the converter settings.
The PNG format supports it, but the conversion cannot invent it. A BMP has no alpha channel, so every pixel including the background arrives fully opaque. Run /removebackground/ afterwards to cut the subject out — then the alpha channel PNG provides has something to store. PNG is the right choice for screenshots, logos, line art and anything with hard edges or transparency — no ringing, no colour banding.
No pixel data, no. Both formats store the image without lossy compression, so the picture that comes out is identical to the one that went in and the conversion can be repeated indefinitely. What changes is file size, and which features travel — colour depth, embedded profiles, layers and animation are all supported unevenly between lossless formats. BMP usually stores completely uncompressed pixel rows with a small header, which is why it is so simple to parse. PNG uses DEFLATE compression over filtered scanlines, so every pixel survives exactly, plus a full 8-bit alpha channel.
Anonymous uploads are capped at a generous default; signed-in free accounts get a higher cap, and Pro accounts have no per-file limit. Browser memory is usually the practical constraint long before our server-side limits kick in.
Yes. Drop or pick multiple BMP files in one upload — the converter processes them in parallel and returns a ZIP of the PNG results. There is no need to repeat the upload step per file.
Uploaded files and PNG outputs are auto-deleted after a short retention window. We do not inspect, share, or train on user files. Direct download links are time-limited and tied to your session.
PNG opens natively in every modern browser, every image viewer, and every photo-editing app. No additional software is needed.
No. The converter runs entirely in your browser plus our cloud — no plugin, no install, no admin rights. It works on Windows, macOS, Linux, ChromeOS, iOS, and Android.
No. BMP to PNG conversion is free and works without an account. Signing in unlocks higher file-size caps, batch history, and API access.

BMP

BMP files store images in uncompressed bitmap format, resulting in large file sizes but perfect sharpness.

PNG

PNG files cover transparency and use lossless compression, making them ideal for graphics, logos, and screenshots.
