What does the BMP to SVG converter do?

BMP is a pixel-grid image. Converting to SVG traces the pixels into vector paths — best for logos, icons, and line art. Photographs do not vectorise cleanly, so the result will look stylised rather than photoreal.
BMP files have no alpha channel, so the result will have a solid background. To get transparency in SVG, use the Remove Background tool on the SVG output.
BMP is a single still, so the SVG output will also be a single frame. Use a multi-image upload plus the Merge tool to build an animated SVG from several stills.
Default settings target broadcast / web quality — visually identical to the source for most viewers. For archival use, pick the highest quality option in the converter settings.
Only up to a point, and it is worth setting expectations first. Tracing turns pixel regions into paths, which works well for logos, line art and flat-colour graphics with clear boundaries. A photograph has no such boundaries, so the trace yields either a crude posterised approximation or an SVG with tens of thousands of paths that is larger and slower to render than the original. SVG cannot represent a photograph — tracing one produces either a crude approximation or a file larger than the original raster.
The SVG format supports it, but the conversion cannot invent it. A BMP has no alpha channel, so every pixel including the background arrives fully opaque. Run /removebackground/ afterwards to cut the subject out — then the alpha channel SVG provides has something to store. SVG renders perfectly at any size, stays editable, is searchable and diffable as plain text, and is usually a fraction of the size of an equivalent PNG.
In an SVG, text is real text — selectable, searchable and re-styleable, and it needs the font to be available or embedded to render as intended. Converting away from SVG turns that text into pixels or into document text depending on the target; converting towards SVG only produces real text if the source had a text layer to begin with.
No pixel data, no. Both formats store the image without lossy compression, so the picture that comes out is identical to the one that went in and the conversion can be repeated indefinitely. What changes is file size, and which features travel — colour depth, embedded profiles, layers and animation are all supported unevenly between lossless formats. BMP usually stores completely uncompressed pixel rows with a small header, which is why it is so simple to parse. An SVG stores shapes as mathematical paths and text as text, not as pixels, so it is a document rather than a raster grid.
