What does the MKV to DIVX converter do?

What happens to the subtitle tracks in my MKV file?

They cannot stay selectable, because DIVX has no soft-subtitle stream to hold them. There are two ways out: burn them into the video during conversion, which makes them permanent and unstyleable, or export them as a separate .srt alongside the DIVX for the player to load. The converter tells you which it did rather than dropping them silently. DivX needs roughly twice the bitrate of H.264 for the same quality and has no path to HDR, 10-bit colour or resolutions beyond 1080p.
My MKV files came from ripping discs — will they convert cleanly?

Cleanly, yes, but check what is inside first. A rip usually carries more than the picture — often several audio languages, sometimes a subtitle track or chapter marks — and whether those survive depends entirely on what the DIVX can hold, not on the rip. The other thing to know is that the encode already happened: the ripper chose a bitrate years ago and no conversion can recover detail it discarded, so if the discs are still around, re-ripping beats re-encoding. MKV is Matroska, an open container designed in 2002 with no licensing restrictions and no ceiling on what it can hold.
Is DIVX a container or a codec, and does that change what I get back?

It changes what to expect from the output file. One side of this conversion names an encoding rather than a wrapper, so what comes back is that bitstream inside whichever container suits it best — normally MP4 or MKV. The extension reflects the container; the codec is what actually determined the file size and where it will play. MKV is codec-agnostic: H.264, HEVC, VP9 and AV1 video sit happily beside AAC, FLAC, Opus, DTS or Dolby audio in the same file. DivX content is MPEG-4 Part 2 video, usually wrapped in AVI, with MP3 or AC-3 audio alongside it.
Is there a file-size limit when converting MKV to DIVX?
