PDF to WebP Conversion FAQ

What does PDF to WEBP produce — one image or many?
+
One WEBP image per PDF page. Multi-page PDFs produce a ZIP of numbered WEBP files. Single-page PDFs return a single WEBP. Page rendering uses 150 DPI by default for a sharp screen-ready result.
PDF files have no alpha channel, so the result will have a solid background. To get transparency in WEBP, use the Remove Background tool on the WEBP output.
PDF is a single still, so the WEBP output will also be a single frame. Use a multi-image upload plus the Merge tool to build an animated WEBP from several stills.
Default settings target broadcast / web quality — visually identical to the source for most viewers. For archival use, pick the highest quality option in the converter settings.
The format does, but the source has no alpha to give it — video frames and rendered pages are fully opaque by nature, so every pixel arrives solid. The alpha channel is still useful afterwards: it means you can cut a subject out of the WEBP later without changing format again. WebP is typically 25-35% smaller than an equivalent JPG and far smaller than an animated GIF, with universal browser support since 2020.
Quality 85 is the sensible default and the one used unless you change it — visually indistinguishable from the source at normal viewing distance, at roughly a fifth of the size of a lossless equivalent. Push to 95 for anything that will be edited or printed, and drop to 70 for thumbnails where size dominates. WebP offers both lossy and lossless modes, with alpha transparency and animation available in either.
Yes — the page-range option takes `1-5`, `1,3,5` or `all`, so a single chapter, an appendix or just the cover can be extracted without processing the rest. On a long document that is the difference between a handful of files and several hundred.
It depends entirely on whether real text is present. A PDF generated from a document carries an actual text layer and is searchable; a PDF built from scans or images is a picture of text and is not, until OCR adds a layer. /pdf-ocr/ does that, and it is worth running before any conversion that expects to read the words.
Yes — each page renders as its own WEBP file and the set arrives as a ZIP. The page-range option narrows that down when you only want a cover or a single chapter, and setting it to a single page returns one file rather than an archive.
Anonymous uploads are capped at a generous default; signed-in free accounts get a higher cap, and Pro accounts have no per-file limit. Browser memory is usually the practical constraint long before our server-side limits kick in.
Yes. Drop or pick multiple PDF files in one upload — the converter processes them in parallel and returns a ZIP of the WEBP results. There is no need to repeat the upload step per file.
Uploaded files and WEBP outputs are auto-deleted after a short retention window. We do not inspect, share, or train on user files. Direct download links are time-limited and tied to your session.
