PDF to ODT Conversion FAQ

What does the PDF to ODT converter do?
+
It converts a PDF document into ODT. Text, paragraph styles, tables, and embedded images are preserved as closely as the target format allows.
Headings, paragraph styles, tables, and embedded images carry across. Advanced layout (text boxes, complex columns, macros) may simplify when ODT does not support the feature one-for-one.
Block-level layout (headings, paragraphs, lists, tables, inline images) is reconstructed from the PDF's text and positioning. Highly designed PDFs with overlapping or rotated elements may flow differently in ODT, which is a fundamentally re-flowable format.
Yes — extracted text is fully selectable and editable in ODT. Scanned PDFs (image-only) need OCR first; enable the OCR option in the converter settings for those.
That is the main thing you gain. A PDF has fixed pages, so a small screen either shrinks the whole page or forces horizontal scrolling. The ODT stores text as text, so the reader re-wraps it to any screen width and font size. Multi-column layouts and large tables are where reflow struggles — those are the parts worth checking after conversion. ODT is the mandated format in several national and EU public administrations and carries no vendor lock-in.
Yes — that is the point of converting out of PDF. The output opens as a real document with live paragraphs, styles and tables rather than a frozen page image, so you can edit it directly instead of retyping. Heavily designed source layouts convert less cleanly than plain prose, so expect to tidy spacing on anything built on a complex grid.
Body text, headings, lists and simple tables move across cleanly in both directions. The known casualties are the same ones LibreOffice has always had: tracked changes, comments anchored to ranges, footnote numbering schemes and nested table borders. Check those specifically rather than assuming the whole document made it.
Then the conversion produces a picture of the text rather than the text itself, and searching it finds nothing. Run /pdf-ocr/ to add a recognised text layer first; optical character recognition turns the scanned pixels into selectable, searchable characters that the conversion can then carry through properly.
Anonymous uploads are capped at a generous default; signed-in free accounts get a higher cap, and Pro accounts have no per-file limit. Browser memory is usually the practical constraint long before our server-side limits kick in.
Yes. Drop or pick multiple PDF files in one upload — the converter processes them in parallel and returns a ZIP of the ODT results. There is no need to repeat the upload step per file.
Uploaded files and ODT outputs are auto-deleted after a short retention window. We do not inspect, share, or train on user files. Direct download links are time-limited and tied to your session.
Yes — ODT opens in Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice, and most office suites. Text, formatting, and tables are editable.

PDF files preserve formatting across all devices and operating systems, making them ideal for sharing files that need to look the same everywhere.

ODT

ODT (Open Document Text) is a file format used for word processing files in open-source office suites like LibreOffice and OpenOffice. ODT files contain text, images, and formatting, granting a standardized format for file interchange.
