PDF to GIF Conversion FAQ
What does PDF to GIF produce — one image or many?
+
One GIF image per PDF page. Multi-page PDFs produce a ZIP of numbered GIF files. Single-page PDFs return a single GIF. Page rendering uses 150 DPI by default for a sharp screen-ready result.
Will my GIF have a transparent background?
+
PDF files have no alpha channel, so the result will have a solid background. To get transparency in GIF, use the Remove Background tool on the GIF output.
Can I animate the result of converting PDF to GIF?
+
PDF is a single still, so the GIF output will also be a single frame. Use a multi-image upload plus the Merge tool to build an animated GIF from several stills.
What output quality should I expect from PDF to GIF?
+
Default settings target broadcast / web quality — visually identical to the source for most viewers. For archival use, pick the highest quality option in the converter settings.
Does the GIF output support transparency?
+
The format does, but the source has no alpha to give it — video frames and rendered pages are fully opaque by nature, so every pixel arrives solid. The alpha channel is still useful afterwards: it means you can cut a subject out of the GIF later without changing format again. GIF animation plays absolutely everywhere — email clients, forums, chat apps and browsers all render it with no codec negotiation.
How big will the GIF files be?
+
Larger than you might expect, because GIF keeps every pixel exactly rather than approximating. A 1080p still lands around 2-5 MB and a 4K still around 6-15 MB, so a long extraction run adds up quickly. That is the right trade when the images feed further processing, and the wrong one when they are going straight onto a web page. GIF is lossless but capped at a 256-colour palette per frame, using LZW compression and single-colour binary transparency.
Can I convert only part of the PDF instead of all of it?
+
Yes — the page-range option takes `1-5`, `1,3,5` or `all`, so a single chapter, an appendix or just the cover can be extracted without processing the rest. On a long document that is the difference between a handful of files and several hundred.
Is the PDF side of this conversion searchable?
+
It depends entirely on whether real text is present. A PDF generated from a document carries an actual text layer and is searchable; a PDF built from scans or images is a picture of text and is not, until OCR adds a layer. /pdf-ocr/ does that, and it is worth running before any conversion that expects to read the words.
Do I get one image per page?
+
Yes — each page renders as its own GIF file and the set arrives as a ZIP. The page-range option narrows that down when you only want a cover or a single chapter, and setting it to a single page returns one file rather than an archive.
Is there a file-size limit when converting PDF to GIF?
+
Anonymous uploads are capped at a generous default; signed-in free accounts get a higher cap, and Pro accounts have no per-file limit. Browser memory is usually the practical constraint long before our server-side limits kick in.
Can I batch-convert several PDF files to GIF at once?
+
Yes. Drop or pick multiple PDF files in one upload — the converter processes them in parallel and returns a ZIP of the GIF results. There is no need to repeat the upload step per file.
What happens to my PDF files after the conversion?
+
Uploaded files and GIF outputs are auto-deleted after a short retention window. We do not inspect, share, or train on user files. Direct download links are time-limited and tied to your session.
