What does the TIFF to JPG converter do?

TIFF is a lossless image format; JPG uses lossy compression. The converter re-encodes pixel data into JPG, trading some fine detail for a smaller file. For photographs this is usually invisible; for sharp graphics it can introduce halos around edges. JPG is the JPEG standard from 1992, served under the .jpg, .jpeg and .jfif extensions alike, and after three decades it is still the format most cameras and most websites use for photographs.
JPG does not support transparency. Transparent regions in the TIFF will be flattened against a solid background — white by default. If you need to keep transparency, convert to PNG, WebP, or TIFF instead.
You can convert the JPG back to TIFF on this site. If either format involved is lossy, the round-trip is not bit-perfect even though it is visually or audibly close.
Typically 5-10x smaller for images, 5-15x smaller for audio. Exact ratio depends on the chosen quality level and the content — flat solid-colour images and silent audio compress far more than detailed photos or busy soundtracks.
They are flattened, permanently, into one composited image. Blend modes, masks, adjustment layers and editable text are all resolved into final pixels because JPG has no structure to hold them. Keep the TIFF as the working master and treat the JPG strictly as an export. TIFF handles CMYK, 16-bit depth, embedded ICC profiles and multi-page documents, which is exactly what print and archival workflows require. JPG has no transparency, degrades further every time it is re-saved, and produces visible blocking on flat colour and sharp text.
No — JPG has no alpha channel, so transparent regions are composited against a background colour, white unless you change it. That is the single most common surprise in this conversion: a logo that looked clean on a dark page arrives with a white box around it. Set the matte colour to match wherever the image will sit, or choose a target that keeps alpha.
At quality 80-85 the difference is invisible at normal viewing distance and the file typically drops by 60-80%. The catch is that it is one-way: re-saving the JPG repeatedly compounds the artefacts each time. Keep the TIFF as the master and regenerate the JPG from it whenever you need a new size. JPG is lossy: the image is transformed with a DCT, quantised, and entropy-coded, with a quality knob controlling how much is discarded.
By default yes, wherever the target has somewhere to put it — camera model, exposure settings, lens and GPS coordinates all carry across. GPS is the field worth thinking about: if the image is going to be published, use the strip-metadata option so you are not broadcasting where the photo was taken. TIFF is the Tagged Image File Format from 1986, and it is the format scanning, publishing and archiving industries standardised on.
