VOB to PNG Conversion FAQ

What does the VOB to PNG converter do?
+
It converts a VOB file into PNG format.
VOB files have no alpha channel, so the result will have a solid background. To get transparency in PNG, use the Remove Background tool on the PNG output.
You can convert the PNG back to VOB on this site. If either format involved is lossy, the round-trip is not bit-perfect even though it is visually or audibly close.
Yes — lossless containers store every byte. Expect the PNG to be 3-8x the size of the VOB. The benefit is no further quality loss on editing or re-encoding.
Because the source is interlaced. VOB content from the broadcast and DVD era stores two half-height fields per frame, captured a fiftieth of a second apart, and a still pulled straight out shows both woven together as combing on anything that moved. Enable deinterlacing before extraction and each still is built from a single reconstructed progressive frame. VOB is the Video Object container found in the VIDEO_TS folder of every DVD — an MPEG-2 program stream with DVD-specific navigation data added.
The one you point at, not just the first. A timestamp picks a single moment out of the VOB; an interval setting walks the whole video and returns one PNG per step, delivered as a ZIP. The default grabs a frame a few seconds in rather than at 00:00, because the opening frame of a video is very often black.
The format does, but the source has no alpha to give it — video frames and rendered pages are fully opaque by nature, so every pixel arrives solid. The alpha channel is still useful afterwards: it means you can cut a subject out of the PNG later without changing format again. PNG is the right choice for screenshots, logos, line art and anything with hard edges or transparency — no ringing, no colour banding.
Larger than you might expect, because PNG keeps every pixel exactly rather than approximating. A 1080p still lands around 2-5 MB and a 4K still around 6-15 MB, so a long extraction run adds up quickly. That is the right trade when the images feed further processing, and the wrong one when they are going straight onto a web page. PNG uses DEFLATE compression over filtered scanlines, so every pixel survives exactly, plus a full 8-bit alpha channel.
Anonymous uploads are capped at a generous default; signed-in free accounts get a higher cap, and Pro accounts have no per-file limit. Browser memory is usually the practical constraint long before our server-side limits kick in.
Yes. Drop or pick multiple VOB files in one upload — the converter processes them in parallel and returns a ZIP of the PNG results. There is no need to repeat the upload step per file.
Uploaded files and PNG outputs are auto-deleted after a short retention window. We do not inspect, share, or train on user files. Direct download links are time-limited and tied to your session.
PNG opens natively in every modern browser, every image viewer, and every photo-editing app. No additional software is needed.

VOB

VOB is the container on a video DVD, holding MPEG-2 video, audio, and subtitles, and it may be encrypted.

PNG

PNG files cover transparency and use lossless compression, making them ideal for graphics, logos, and screenshots.
