WebM to WebP Conversion FAQ

What does the WEBM to WEBP converter do?
+
It converts a WEBM file into WEBP format.
WEBM files have no alpha channel, so the result will have a solid background. To get transparency in WEBP, use the Remove Background tool on the WEBP output.
WEBM is a single still, so the WEBP output will also be a single frame. Use a multi-image upload plus the Merge tool to build an animated WEBP from several stills.
Default settings target broadcast / web quality — visually identical to the source for most viewers. For archival use, pick the highest quality option in the converter settings.
The one you point at, not just the first. A timestamp picks a single moment out of the WEBM; an interval setting walks the whole video and returns one WEBP per step, delivered as a ZIP. The default grabs a frame a few seconds in rather than at 00:00, because the opening frame of a video is very often black. WebM is a strict subset of Matroska that Google published in 2010 specifically to give HTML5 video a royalty-free container.
The format does, but the source has no alpha to give it — video frames and rendered pages are fully opaque by nature, so every pixel arrives solid. The alpha channel is still useful afterwards: it means you can cut a subject out of the WEBP later without changing format again. WebP is typically 25-35% smaller than an equivalent JPG and far smaller than an animated GIF, with universal browser support since 2020.
Quality 85 is the sensible default and the one used unless you change it — visually indistinguishable from the source at normal viewing distance, at roughly a fifth of the size of a lossless equivalent. Push to 95 for anything that will be edited or printed, and drop to 70 for thumbnails where size dominates. WebP offers both lossy and lossless modes, with alpha transparency and animation available in either.
Anonymous uploads are capped at a generous default; signed-in free accounts get a higher cap, and Pro accounts have no per-file limit. Browser memory is usually the practical constraint long before our server-side limits kick in.
Yes. Drop or pick multiple WEBM files in one upload — the converter processes them in parallel and returns a ZIP of the WEBP results. There is no need to repeat the upload step per file.
Uploaded files and WEBP outputs are auto-deleted after a short retention window. We do not inspect, share, or train on user files. Direct download links are time-limited and tied to your session.
WEBP opens natively in every modern browser, every image viewer, and every photo-editing app. No additional software is needed.
No. The converter runs entirely in your browser plus our cloud — no plugin, no install, no admin rights. It works on Windows, macOS, Linux, ChromeOS, iOS, and Android.
