GIF to MKV Conversion FAQ

What does the GIF to MKV converter do?
+
It converts a GIF file into MKV format.
MKV does not support transparency. Transparent regions in the GIF will be flattened against a solid background — white by default. If you need to keep transparency, convert to PNG, WebP, or TIFF instead.
MKV is a single-frame format. The converter takes the first frame of the animation by default. To export every frame, convert to MKV after first splitting the GIF with the Split tool.
Typically 5-10x smaller for images, 5-15x smaller for audio. Exact ratio depends on the chosen quality level and the content — flat solid-colour images and silent audio compress far more than detailed photos or busy soundtracks.
Ten seconds by default, and adjustable. A still image has no duration of its own, so the converter holds the frame for a set length and encodes that; supply several images and they become a slideshow at whatever interval you set. Add an audio track and the duration follows the audio instead. MKV is Matroska, an open container designed in 2002 with no licensing restrictions and no ceiling on what it can hold.
Yes — upload an audio file alongside the images and it becomes the video’s soundtrack, with the duration following the audio rather than a fixed per-image interval. Without an audio track the MKV is silent, which some upload targets accept and others reject outright. MKV is codec-agnostic: H.264, HEVC, VP9 and AV1 video sit happily beside AAC, FLAC, Opus, DTS or Dolby audio in the same file.
Anonymous uploads are capped at a generous default; signed-in free accounts get a higher cap, and Pro accounts have no per-file limit. Browser memory is usually the practical constraint long before our server-side limits kick in.
Yes. Drop or pick multiple GIF files in one upload — the converter processes them in parallel and returns a ZIP of the MKV results. There is no need to repeat the upload step per file.
Uploaded files and MKV outputs are auto-deleted after a short retention window. We do not inspect, share, or train on user files. Direct download links are time-limited and tied to your session.
Yes — MKV uses modern codecs that play natively on iOS, Android, Smart TVs, game consoles, and every modern browser.
No. The converter runs entirely in your browser plus our cloud — no plugin, no install, no admin rights. It works on Windows, macOS, Linux, ChromeOS, iOS, and Android.
No. GIF to MKV conversion is free and works without an account. Signing in unlocks higher file-size caps, batch history, and API access.
