WebP to PNG Conversion FAQ

What does the WEBP to PNG converter do?
+
WEBP is already lossy-compressed, so converting to PNG does not magically restore detail — it just stores the existing pixels without further loss. PNG is a good choice when you plan to edit the image further and want each save to preserve quality.
Yes. Both WEBP and PNG support an alpha channel, so transparent and semi-transparent regions carry through unchanged.
PNG is a single-frame format. The converter takes the first frame of the animation by default. To export every frame, convert to PNG after first splitting the WEBP with the Split tool.
Yes — lossless containers store every byte. Expect the PNG to be 3-8x the size of the WEBP. The benefit is no further quality loss on editing or re-encoding.
No. The compression artefacts already baked into the WEBP are ordinary pixel data now, and PNG preserves them perfectly rather than removing them. The file usually gets larger, sometimes several times larger. It is still worth doing before editing, because further edits will not stack a second generation of loss on top. PNG is the right choice for screenshots, logos, line art and anything with hard edges or transparency — no ringing, no colour banding. WebP is still second-class outside the browser — print workflows, older Office builds and some phone galleries do not accept it.
By default yes, wherever the target has somewhere to put it — camera model, exposure settings, lens and GPS coordinates all carry across. GPS is the field worth thinking about: if the image is going to be published, use the strip-metadata option so you are not broadcasting where the photo was taken. WebP is Google’s 2010 image format, built from the VP8 keyframe encoder and intended to replace JPG, PNG and GIF at once.
Only the first frame survives, because PNG is a still format with nowhere to store the rest. If the animation matters, target a format that animates, or convert to a video container instead and keep the motion. PNG is a poor photograph format: a photo saved as PNG is routinely five to ten times larger than the same image as JPG or WebP.
Anonymous uploads are capped at a generous default; signed-in free accounts get a higher cap, and Pro accounts have no per-file limit. Browser memory is usually the practical constraint long before our server-side limits kick in.
Yes. Drop or pick multiple WEBP files in one upload — the converter processes them in parallel and returns a ZIP of the PNG results. There is no need to repeat the upload step per file.
Uploaded files and PNG outputs are auto-deleted after a short retention window. We do not inspect, share, or train on user files. Direct download links are time-limited and tied to your session.
PNG opens natively in every modern browser, every image viewer, and every photo-editing app. No additional software is needed.
No. The converter runs entirely in your browser plus our cloud — no plugin, no install, no admin rights. It works on Windows, macOS, Linux, ChromeOS, iOS, and Android.

WebP

WebP provides superior lossless and lossy compression for images on the web, developed by Google.

PNG

PNG files cover transparency and use lossless compression, making them ideal for graphics, logos, and screenshots.
