WMV to PNG Conversion FAQ
What does the WMV to PNG converter do?
+
It converts a WMV file into PNG format.
Will my PNG have a transparent background?
+
WMV files have no alpha channel, so the result will have a solid background. To get transparency in PNG, use the Remove Background tool on the PNG output.
Is the WMV to PNG conversion reversible?
+
You can convert the PNG back to WMV on this site. If either format involved is lossy, the round-trip is not bit-perfect even though it is visually or audibly close.
Will the PNG be larger than the WMV?
+
Yes — lossless containers store every byte. Expect the PNG to be 3-8x the size of the WMV. The benefit is no further quality loss on editing or re-encoding.
Why do my extracted frames have horizontal lines through them?
+
Because the source is interlaced. WMV content from the broadcast and DVD era stores two half-height fields per frame, captured a fiftieth of a second apart, and a still pulled straight out shows both woven together as combing on anything that moved. Enable deinterlacing before extraction and each still is built from a single reconstructed progressive frame. WMV is Windows Media Video, Microsoft’s ASF-based format from the Windows XP era.
Which frame of the WMV do I actually get as a PNG?
+
The one you point at, not just the first. A timestamp picks a single moment out of the WMV; an interval setting walks the whole video and returns one PNG per step, delivered as a ZIP. The default grabs a frame a few seconds in rather than at 00:00, because the opening frame of a video is very often black.
Does the PNG output support transparency?
+
The format does, but the source has no alpha to give it — video frames and rendered pages are fully opaque by nature, so every pixel arrives solid. The alpha channel is still useful afterwards: it means you can cut a subject out of the PNG later without changing format again. PNG is the right choice for screenshots, logos, line art and anything with hard edges or transparency — no ringing, no colour banding.
How big will the PNG files be?
+
Larger than you might expect, because PNG keeps every pixel exactly rather than approximating. A 1080p still lands around 2-5 MB and a 4K still around 6-15 MB, so a long extraction run adds up quickly. That is the right trade when the images feed further processing, and the wrong one when they are going straight onto a web page. PNG uses DEFLATE compression over filtered scanlines, so every pixel survives exactly, plus a full 8-bit alpha channel.
Is there a file-size limit when converting WMV to PNG?
+
Anonymous uploads are capped at a generous default; signed-in free accounts get a higher cap, and Pro accounts have no per-file limit. Browser memory is usually the practical constraint long before our server-side limits kick in.
Can I batch-convert several WMV files to PNG at once?
+
Yes. Drop or pick multiple WMV files in one upload — the converter processes them in parallel and returns a ZIP of the PNG results. There is no need to repeat the upload step per file.
What happens to my WMV files after the conversion?
+
Uploaded files and PNG outputs are auto-deleted after a short retention window. We do not inspect, share, or train on user files. Direct download links are time-limited and tied to your session.
Where can I open a PNG file?
+
PNG opens natively in every modern browser, every image viewer, and every photo-editing app. No additional software is needed.
