What does the PSD to JPEG converter do?

What happens to transparency when converting PSD to JPEG?

Is the PSD to JPEG conversion reversible?

What happens to the layers in my PSD file?

They are flattened, permanently, into one composited image. Blend modes, masks, adjustment layers and editable text are all resolved into final pixels because JPEG has no structure to hold them. Keep the PSD as the working master and treat the JPEG strictly as an export. PSD keeps every editing decision reversible, which is why it is the master format for design work that will be revised. JPEG shares every JPG limitation — no alpha, generational loss on re-save — with the added nuisance of software that treats the two extensions differently.

Will transparency survive converting PSD to JPEG?

No — JPEG has no alpha channel, so transparent regions are composited against a background colour, white unless you change it. That is the single most common surprise in this conversion: a logo that looked clean on a dark page arrives with a white box around it. Set the matte colour to match wherever the image will sit, or choose a target that keeps alpha.

How much quality will I lose going from PSD to JPEG?

At quality 80-85 the difference is invisible at normal viewing distance and the file typically drops by 60-80%. The catch is that it is one-way: re-saving the JPEG repeatedly compounds the artefacts each time. Keep the PSD as the master and regenerate the JPEG from it whenever you need a new size. The bitstream is identical to a .jpg: DCT-based lossy compression, usually with 4:2:0 chroma subsampling, wrapped in a JFIF or Exif header.
