Will transparency in my PSD be preserved in the WEBP?

What happens to the layers in my PSD file?

They are flattened, permanently, into one composited image. Blend modes, masks, adjustment layers and editable text are all resolved into final pixels because WEBP has no structure to hold them. Keep the PSD as the working master and treat the WEBP strictly as an export. PSD keeps every editing decision reversible, which is why it is the master format for design work that will be revised. WebP is still second-class outside the browser — print workflows, older Office builds and some phone galleries do not accept it.

How much quality will I lose going from PSD to WEBP?

At quality 80-85 the difference is invisible at normal viewing distance and the file typically drops by 60-80%. The catch is that it is one-way: re-saving the WEBP repeatedly compounds the artefacts each time. Keep the PSD as the master and regenerate the WEBP from it whenever you need a new size. WebP offers both lossy and lossless modes, with alpha transparency and animation available in either.

Will my CMYK colour survive the conversion to WEBP?

It is converted to sRGB, because WEBP has no CMYK mode. For screen use that is exactly what you want. For commercial print it is not — the gamut shift changes how saturated colours reproduce on press, so send the printer the original PSD rather than the WEBP.

Is there a file-size limit when converting PSD to WEBP?
